Primitive Reflexes and ADHD: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

This systematic review and meta-analysis examined 229 children with ADHD across four studies to evaluate the relationship between ADHD and retained primitive reflexes. Researchers found that non-integrated asymmetric and symmetric tonic neck reflexes (ATNR and STNR) were moderately and significantly associated with ADHD symptoms, with greater reflex persistence linked to more pronounced behavioral and cognitive difficulties. The findings suggest that retained primitive reflexes may contribute to ADHD symptom presentation, although further research is needed to better understand the nature of this relationship.
