Tactile Sensitivity and Early Sensory Development in Infancy

This longitudinal study examined 69 infants ages 1–7 months to better understand tactile sensitivity and motor responses to touch, including infants with prior experiences such as surgery, anesthesia, or critical illness. Researchers found that motor responses increased with stimulus intensity, while pain sensitivity changed with age in ways that reflected typical nervous system development. Importantly, tactile sensitivity remained stable and was not significantly affected by previous medical interventions, highlighting the resilience of early sensory development during infancy.
