The Head Righting Reflex and Later Developmental Outcomes

This longitudinal study examined whether the head righting reflex (HRR) in newborns could predict later developmental outcomes by assessing 54 infants shortly after birth and following them to age five. Researchers found that infants with a strong and present HRR demonstrated better balance, speech and language development, and social-emotional outcomes later in childhood. In contrast, infants with absent or incomplete reflexes reached developmental milestones, such as sitting, walking, and talking, at later ages. The findings suggest that early reflex assessment may provide valuable insight into future developmental outcomes and highlight the importance of early neurological functioning in child development.
