Many individuals with autism, ADHD, learning differences, sensory processing challenges, and mental health conditions experience ongoing difficulties that do not stem from a single cause. Total Load Theory provides a biological framework for understanding how multiple stressors—genetic, environmental, emotional, infectious, structural, and lifestyle-related—accumulate over time and overwhelm the nervous system, contributing to dysfunction.
In this informative session, Patricia Lemer, M.Ed., NCC, will draw on her decades of experience to help participants:
Understand Total Load Theory and why cumulative stressors—not isolated symptoms—drive many neurodevelopmental and mental health challenges
Explore the role of trauma and why a sense of safety is essential for nervous system regulation
Learn how the Masgutova Method supports nervous system regulation as part of a holistic, biologically informed approach
Identify practical ways to reduce the total load through lifestyle changes, movement, sleep, nutrition, and realistic expectations
Gain insight into why meaningful improvement is possible at any age
This session is ideal for parents, caregivers, therapists, educators, and medical professionals seeking a root-cause-oriented understanding of neurodevelopment and mental health.
About the Speaker
Patricia S. Lemer, M.Ed, NCC is a licensed professional counselor and an internationally recognized authority on applying a holistic model of care to autism, ADHD, learning and mental health conditions. For over 50 years she has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to identifying and ameliorating root causes rather than treat symptoms.
Ms. Lemer was the first to apply the “Total Load Theory” to neurodevelopmental disorders. This engineering concept postulates that each unique individual, like a bridge, accumulates an overload of stressors that eventually causes dysfunction.
In 1993, Ms. Lemer co-founded one of the first organizations offering information online. From 2012-2014, she helped establish the first center for young adults with disabilities in Kuwait.
She is the author of four books, including the award-winning Outsmarting Autism (2019). Her present book, published in November, 2025, Total Load Theory: Transforming Lives in Autism, ADHD, LD, SPD, and Mental Health expands her approach beyond autism. The role of reflexes has been featured in her work since she met Dr. Masgutova through her good friend, core specialist, Mary Rentschler.
Patricia is the moderator of the bimonthly podcast “The Autism Detective,” now featuring over 100 episodes on Spotify and other social media platforms. Patricia’s ability to weave complex concepts with practical solutions for empowering individuals of all ages has earned her the admiration of families and professionals alike.
